Have you noticed a big drop in traffic?

A sudden drop in search traffic can be a very stressful time for an online business owner. What’s happened? How can I get the traffic back? Don’t panic. We’ve seen plenty of manual search penalties and traffic filters and we’ve worked with site owners and content producers to make sure they get their search rankings and traffic back.

Number of hits down?

Has your traffic graph taken a nosedive overnight? This is indicative of the drop in traffic from a search engine penalty.

Search keywords down?

Have you noticed the search keywords that used to bring visitors to your site no longer pulling in the same traffic volume.

Dropped in search results?

Can’t find your site in the search results. “I’m sure we used to be on page 1 for this keyword?” Not any more.

Security or virus warnings

Has your site been infected with malware or a rogue virus code injection. That’s not going to look good to customers at all.

Sales conversion ratio drop

Are your sales suddenly slumping due to a drop in search traffic? You’re no loner pulling in all those potential customers.

Customer complaints?

Customers complaining they can’t find your web site or are worried about a virus warning from their anti-virus.

Common Causes Of Search Penalties

If you've noticed a sudden drop in traffic to your site these are some common causes we see

Backlinks

If a high percentage of the links pointing to your site are from poor quality sites. Then you’re going to see traffic loss rather quickly. Especially if those links are “paid for links” that have been acquired over a short period of time.

Duplicate Content

Duplicate content can be a tricky one to catch because many content management systems have a habit of creating duplicate content. Try and make your content unique and don’t cut corners by copying other sites.

Security Breach

If your site is compromised and your pages are infected with spam, porn or viruses you will see a huge drop in traffic. Google will tag your site as infected, drop you out of the search results and warn any visitors to your site of the risks.

Over Optimisation

Stuffing your site full of juicy keywords to rank for big money no.1 spots? Yeah, good luck with that. Over eager optimisation, keyword stuffing and page rank sculpting is a sure fire way to get a nice big fat search penalty.

Identify and fix page based site penalties

Have you created pages just for search engines? One over optimised or overly “spammy” page on your site that’s crammed with keywords and links is just one big red flag for Google. “hey, we’re trying to con you into thinking our site is really good!” Don’t do it! If you’re unsure we can identify and fix these bad pages that could be dragging your whole site down the serps.

Analyse keyword targeting for over optimisation

Are you pushing a bit too hard on some of your target keywords? Are you trying to cram a few extra product or brand names into your site text or blog posts? Believe it or not you could actually be harming your site by doing this. We can help you identify areas where this could be causing problems and rectify where needed.

Establish whether this is a problem or the direct result of a search relevancy update

When Google does an update to it’s search rankings some sites can be considerably bounced around the search results. It’s referred to by the seo community as the “Google Dance” over the period of the update and for days after web sites appear to dance randomly around the results pages before settling into their natural position.

Analyse site for possible malicious attack

Being a site owner and having experienced a site being hacked and injected with malicious code – I can tell you this is not the job for an amateur. You need to know your html and php/asp inside out and be aware of what bad code looks like. Remove the infection first and then find out why to prevent this happening again.
